Project Introduction:
Location: Nanakuli, Waiʻanae, Oʻahu
Distribution Partner: Inter-Island Solar Supply
Installer: HI Tech Plumbing
Completed: 2022

In response to overcrowded living conditions, recent beach evictions, homes fallen into disrepair and abandoned in the Nanakuli Homestead community, a cooperative was formed between the Nanakuli Hawaiian Homestead Community Association (the neighborhood association), Urban Housing Communities (UHC), USDA Rural Development, Department of Hawaiian Homelands, Hawaiian Housing Finance and Development Corporation and Hawaiian Community Development. UHC used a financing structure, never before used in Hawaii to fund the 48 affordable apartments at substantially below-market rents, providing homes for Oahu’s most needy families. Part of the Nanakuli “village center” project, this beautifully designed community reflects Hawaii’s cultural past. On-site amenities include: Resource center, BBQ/Picnic area, tot lot, laundry, secure gated access, onsite security and manager.
