Solar Thermal Space Heating Systems

Solar Radiant Systems – A Sustainable and Cost-Effective Solution for Heating

Solar Thermal Space Heating Systems capture energy from the sun to supplement the existing heating system for a residential or commercial building. Utilizing solar heating collectors which efficiently absorb the heat produced by the sun, much of the fuel cost can be offset with clean energy utilization.

These systems are often designed to fit a specific application or home, and can be used to provide interior heat during colder weather and utilized for other purposes in warmer weather, such as a swimming pool and domestic water heating.

A solar radiant system is a type of solar heating system that uses solar energy to heat a space or water using radiant heat transfer. It may also be referred to as a solar (thermal) space heating system, solar hydronic system, or solar (hot water) space heating system.

A hydronic space heating system works with your existing hot water based heating system. A fluid is circulated through the solar array, where it is heated, and then the heat is transferred to the solar storage tank.

As the water passes through the heat exchanger, it is warmed, and then returned to your heating system. This effectively keeps your heating system off - or significantly shortens the amount of energy the backup heater consumes.

An added heat exchanger is often used with hydronic space heating systems to provide for domestic hot water or supplemental pool heating as well. This is especially effective during the summer months, when the heating system is not active.

If you're considering installing a solar radiant system, here are a few additional points to keep in mind:

  • The size and design of the system will depend on the specific heating needs of your space, so it's important to work with a professional installer to ensure optimal performance.
  • In areas with limited sunlight, solar radiant systems may not be as effective, so it's important to consider the climate and location of your building.
  • Some solar radiant systems can also be used for cooling during hot summer months by circulating cool water through the radiant flooring.
  • In addition to energy savings, installing a solar radiant system may also increase the value of your property and make it more attractive to eco-conscious buyers.
  • Solar radiant systems are suitable for both residential and commercial buildings.
  • They can be integrated with radiant flooring for even heat distribution.
  • These systems can heat water for domestic purposes, including showering and washing dishes.
  • In areas with high heating or energy costs, a well-designed solar radiant system can lead to significant energy bill savings.
  • The long-lasting and low-maintenance systems have no moving parts and can endure for decades.
  • Solar radiant systems use renewable energy from the sun, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and cutting carbon emissions.

Overall, solar radiant systems are a sustainable and cost-effective heating solution that offer numerous benefits for both residential and commercial buildings. With proper installation and maintenance, they can provide reliable and efficient heating for decades while reducing your carbon footprint and energy bills.
